The course is concerned with the modeling, analysis and control of ac machines. The principal focus of the course is on induction machines.

The course is partitioned into four main, but overlapping, parts.

The first part is concerned with the representation of windings using winding functions, and using these representations to calculate machine inductances.

The second part uses the inductances to develop dynamic electromechanical machine models. An exhaustive treatment of reference frame theory is included in this part.

The third part uses the machine models to analyse behaviour under transient, small-signal and steady state conditions. A treatment of reduced order modeling is also included.

The fourth part concentrates on machine control, and uses the transient model as a basis for developing control methods.

Contents:

Introduction to ac drives, winding function representation, machine inductance calculations, reference frame theory, dynamic modelling of symmetrical induction machines, derivation of the steady state model, reduced order and small- signal modelling, machine modelling with dynamic phasors, vector control of induction machines.
