Under items B.1.8, B.1.9 and B.1.11 of the 2nd meeting of the Senate of the Institute (IIT Palakkad) held on 17 Nov 2017, it is resolved that maximum of six credits of Professional Major Elective (PME) and three credits of General Category Elective ( GCE) courses may be earned through online courses and courses offered at other IITs and academic institutions similar in repute to IITs in India and abroad and recommends that for the above said purpose, the online portals, courses and institutions are to be approved by the senate (B.1.9) and the courses completed outside IIT Palakkad be considered for satisfying the credit requirements alone and not to be included for GPA/CGPA calculations (B.1.11).
As discussed in the PIC meeting on 1 December 2016, please find below text quoted verbatim on the approval for NPTEL online courses - taken only for credit and not for CGPA calculation - in the IITM Senate meeting.
The minutes of the meeting of the 213th meeting of the Board of Academic Courses held on 11.08.2016 was considered and the Senate resolved to approve: For Permitting BTech/DD students to do 7 credits (old) and 20 credits (new) elective courses through NPTEL online courses or other online course offerings approved by senate. These credits are to be transferred using a procedure similar to credit transfer from other institutions".
What is the formula for conversion of NPTEL MOOC credits to IITM-2015 curriculum credit hours? What is the process to obtain credit transfer? If the MOOC is done during the semester and if the credits (calculated post-SEAT process) exceed 60, will that be acceptable?
1 - NPTEL credit is 3 - post 2015 (new) credits. Students can earn up to 27 new credits in FREE category through NPTEL courses. This is not counted into the semester load hence the maximum 60 credits does not include NPTEL credits. After completion of NPTEL course the student has to claim by attaching the xerox of the NPTEL certificate. Original certificate to be shown for verification.
After a student gets a certificate of pass from NPTEL, a copy has to be uploaded on work flow under general -> student ticket. For free category NPTEL credits only the faculty advisor (automatic on workflow) need to approve.
If a student wants any other (E, H, P or S) credits, concerned HoD must approve (offline on the copy of the certificate before uploading). Under H category a maximum of 9 credits only can be permitted.
Note: ONLY B.Tech elective credits can be obtained from NPTEL. No core courses or DD/M.Tech level elective credits can be earned through NPTEL.
